“No-one opens emails”
“Email is spammy” – yup, I’ve heard them all.
I need to start by calling out these marketing myths so we can get them out of the way. Because email marketing is NOT dead. In fact, it’s growing. And if you can master the content and strategy, your email list can quickly turn into a gold mine.
When I asked this question on social media, part of the reason people felt email is not effective is because they have been subject to irritating newsletters from faceless companies whose sole purpose is to get anyone to buy. (Which is the easiest way to convince someone to hit unsubscribe)
But if you’re a small online business and are struggling to hit your sales targets, emails could be the missing piece in your marketing strategy that will help you seal the deal, whether it be to book a sales call or sign up for your course.
And it’s a well known fact that the ROI for email marketing is about $38 for every $1 spent.
So if you’re still not convinced, here are 10 reasons why you NEED to be using email marketing in your business. 👇🏼
1. EVERYONE WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION HAS AN EMAIL ADDRESS
This sounds pretty basic, and that’s because it is. You might have experienced the frustration of connecting with contacts on one social media platform and trying to get them to follow you somewhere else where you’re more active.
This is pretty normal for smaller businesses who don’t have large teams to manage multiple social platforms. Not everyone is on all social media sites and not everyone interacts with each one the same. But because they all have email, you can funnel all your contacts into your mailing list from wherever you meet.
2. CONVERSION RATES ARE HIGH
Compared to social media, email marketing has significantly higher conversion rates.
Why?
Because the people on your list have already expressed an interest in what you do AND trust you enough to open the virtual door to their inbox.
If you’re consistently building and nurturing a warm audience through your email list, customers are going to feel much more at ease buying from you.
3. PERSONALISATION FEATURES
One of my favourite things about email marketing is that it offers options to personalise emails. This automatically gives it the upper hand over things like social media and paid ads because this simply isn’t possible on these platforms.
And people LIKE it. According to Experian, emails that have a personalised subject line are 26% more likely to be opened. Making your customer feel valued has never been so simple!
4. SEGMENTING IS EASY
You can use segmentation by separating your audience into sections/groups so the right customers are getting the right messages when the timing is right (so no more sales emails when you’ve already bought the freaking product! 🤦♀️)
The best part is that the more emails you send, the more data you collect about their interests making it easier to write content your audience want to hear – it’s like free market research!
5. DATA CAPTURE
Speaking of data, the best email marketing tools give you a TON of it. Like seriously, I’m talking more than you’ll know what to do with! You’ll be able to see exactly what is working and what is not, just by looking at the metrics. You can use this information to build better campaigns and see even bigger results!
6. RE-MARKETING CAPABILITIES
Once you’ve built up an email list you can use this information to remarket services in the future. This is helpful for building audiences for things like paid advertising, provided you have the right permissions, but can also be useful within your email list.
Let’s assume a person clicks on your landing page and has a quick look at your offer. If they decide not to buy from you, it’s possible to then show them this again through another targeted email, increasing the likelihood of them buying. Kind of cool right?
7. AUTOMATIONS ALLOW FOR EVERGREEN SELLING
This is the fun part of email marketing and why so many businesses take advantage of this in their marketing strategy. Choose an email tool with automation features so that once it’s set up, you can literally start making money in your sleep!
There is a bit of a learning curve with automated emails, which is something I dive into with my clients, but once you have them set up these can be a great way to generate passive income, run a launch or simply nurture your audience.
8. YOU OWN YOUR LIST
Did you hear Instagram is being shut down? Yeah neither did I. Because it isn’t. But what if it was? Would your business survive or would all those connections you’ve worked to get for months or even years disappear with a puff of smoke?
The beauty of an email list is that you own the contacts who have consented to receive the information from you. So if you decide you don’t like something about your email provider, you leave and you aren’t trapped if something changes within an algorithm.
9. IT'S SUPER VERSITILE
Unlike some social media posts, emails have very few restrictions in terms of what you can share. You can embed links, include images/videos, send countdown timers, attach free downloads and so much more.
(I say this with a pinch of salt, this is not permission to attach 15 things or link to 23 different blog posts in one email: just because you can doesn’t mean you should 😂)
10. YOU CAN FLEX YOUR CREATIVE MUSCLES
Last but not least, email marketing is super creative. You can use your own colours, fonts and logos to create emails, which not only share information but also help to build your brand.
But aside from the visual aspects, there are thousands of different strategies to create, build and scale your mailing list to really start generating, nurturing and converting your leads into loyal, paying customers.
